India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Announcement: Ishan Kishan In, Shubman Gill Misses Out!

T20 World Cup 2026

On Saturday (December 20), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) revealed the list of Indian players included in the 15-member squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2026.

As expected, Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the Indian captain with Axar Patel serving as his deputy.

Alongside the wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma, vice-captain Shubman Gill was part of India’s T20I squad starting from the Asia Cup 2025 till the recently concluded 5-match T20I series against South Africa. However, the duo missed out on securing a spot in the squad, with Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan making a comeback into the 20-over format.

First Team to Announce T20 World Cup 2026 Squad

Surprisingly, India was the first team to officially announce its 15-member squad for the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2026.

The co-hosting nation, Sri Lanka, revealed its preliminary squad comprising 25 players on December 19, 2025 (Friday).

India’s Dynamic Batting Line-Up

The proven opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma adds fuel power to the top order, particularly in powerplays.

Although Suryakumar Yadav has been going through a poor run with the bat, it is expected that he could make a comeback on a grand stage. Tilak Varma’s anchoring abilities at the No.4 position make the batting line-up a highly formidable one.

Rinku Singh and Ishan Kishan can prove to be the explosive left-handed finishers, with either one of them guaranteed to secure a spot in the main XI.

A Balanced Group of All-Rounders

Hardik Pandya’s aggression while batting at the No.5 spot, added with his dual skills as a pacer, makes him a lethal weapon against any opponent.

Pace bowling all-rounder Shivam Dube’s multi-abilities as a hard-hitting batter and fast bowler bolster the batting and bowling line-up of the defending champions.

The duo of spin bowling all-rounder stars, namely Axar Patel and Washington Sundar, can contribute effectively as a lower-order batter and as a core spinner in the middle overs.

Properly Organized Bowling Line-Up

Three frontline pacers, namely Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh, and Harshit Rana, will spearhead the pace bowling attack alongside the all-rounders Hardik Pandya and Shivam Dube.

Varun Chakravarthy and Kuldeep Yadav, as the two specialist spinners, will lead the spin bowling attack.

Sanju Samson vs Ishan Kishan: A Tough Choice for Wicketkeeper-Batter

Sanju Samson would be fortunate enough to see his name included in the 15-member squad after losing his opening spot to his vice-captain, Shubman Gill.

The 31-year-old faces stiff competition from Ishan Kishan, whose recent form in domestic cricket has made him deserve a spot in the T20I squad after a two-year hiatus.

Notably, Ishan was the highest run scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025, having scored 517 runs in 10 innings at an average of 57.44. Under his captaincy, Jharkhand clinched its maiden SMAT trophy.

Especially, Ishan’s 49-ball 101-run knock in the SMAT 2025 final set the tone for his team to secure a 69-run victory against Haryana.

BCCI Chief Selector About India’s T20 World Cup 2026 Squad

Soon after announcing the T20 World Cup 2026 squad, BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar spoke about the omission of Gill and Jitesh:

“See! Considering the batting combinations, if the wicketkeeper is Sanju Samson, who is likely to bat in the top order, there should be a backup of another keeper (speaking about Ishan Kishan).

Jitesh Sharma hasn’t done anything wrong, but he doesn’t fit into our plans right now. Although he hasn’t scored much of many runs at the moment, we are aware that he is a quality player. Unfortunately, he missed out on the previous World Cup as well. However, the team combination comes first before anything else.

As there are two wicketkeepers at the top order, trying out with Rinku Singh adds more depth to the batting line-up at the lower order. While selecting 15 players and building a perfect combination, someone would certainly miss out. Unfortunately, it is none other than Gill who missed out on a golden chance at this moment,” Agarkar said.

Moreover, Gill had a disastrous outing in T20Is in 2025, having compiled just 291 runs in 15 innings at an average below 25 and a strike rate of 137. He hasn’t scored any fifties or centuries to his name this year, which shows his lack of intent with the bat in the shortest format.
